Petra Cortright Art & Lecture

Feature image is my remix of 3 of Petra’s artworks – it seemed like the right thing to do. In April, 2018 I attended a lecture by UCSB Department of Creative Studies for their Spring 2018 Visiting Artist Colloquium where digital artist, Petra Cortright, was presenting. Her husband, artist Marc Horowitz also was on stage and…

La Macina di San Cresci Artist Residency

Fiercefull

This is a new piece that I created from different images. I wanted to work on a piece of a woman of African descent as a tribute to “Claudia,” the woman who was hired as a helper to my mother and became a surrogate mother after she died. I think of her often and remember…

Inspired by Marielle Franco

This morning in my news feed, I read about the murder of Marielle Franco. “Prominent human rights advocate and councilwoman Marielle Franco was fatally shot while in her car by unknown assailants”. Mariella was a human rights activist and councilwoman in Rio de Janeiro and was part of a generation of young Black Brazilians who are becoming increasingly vocal inside and…

All that I am surrounded by inspires my art; whether it is a memory, an experience with current or cultural events, moments captured on the street art or experiments with technology. I am fascinated by the interconnections created when disjointed realities are brought together to form and define my experience. I am motivated to continue…

Hybrid Art Research & Painting

“Hybrid art resides in between, around, above and below what is generally accepted as “culture” and usually is experimental and exploring new ideas that require collaboration with other disciplines. Many times it is not even considered art by the established art world because hybridity does not subscribe the usual, established categories or definitions.  –  Victoria…

First day of class

Today was our first online group chat with Jonathan Kearney and my classmates. Our homework is to get this blog going and create a 5 minute video introducing myself and the art I make to the class. About the blog… I am figuring out Wordpress and getting frustrated, but Jonathan said failure and frustration is part of the process. My classmates are from all over the world and have very different, but related areas of interest and expertise. While on the chat session, I was journaling. I feel like the woman in the art above, in a magical place. The landscape is unknown and alive. I am inspired to find new ways of seeing and making.
